3rd Workcamp

1. Dates: 15/07 – 04/08

2. Location: Assahoun

Assahoun is a town of 5000 inhabitants. It is located about 50 km from Lomé on the way to Kpalimé. Its main activities are agriculture and small trade, which keep 95% of the population busy. There are 3 primary schools and a high school, as well as other structures such as a hospital, a market place, churches, communication centres and a post office.

3. Theme: Education and children entertainment / Reforestation.

The aim of the project is to lead the kids to discover the others with their cultures and ways of life, to provide them with capacity building methods that are different from those they usually have, and to relieve the parents for some hours.

Through the project we want also to raise the awareness of the population on the benefits brought by trees. Together with FAGAD the teachers and the parents have decided to reforest the school. The project forms part of an awareness-raising campaign and the struggle for environmental protection. It is also a support given to education as the school will be given a self-supporting source of income through fruit-selling. We also want to use the opportunity to create interaction between the group of pupils and the parents.

Work o be done:

- To supervise the kids during the activities and organise a programme of games, handicraft, performances, school support, guided tours, and tree planting.

4. Other activities:

· Tourist sites to be visited: excursion to Mount Agou (the highest mountain in

Togo), a town called Aného (on the way to Benin and wherefrom it is possible to go to Togoville with a boat-trip on Lake Togo, one of the biggest lakes in Togo), and the town of Togoville (there is a pond with sacred crocodiles 22 km away, a phosphate site, and a lake with hippos in Lacata).

· There are also possibilities to discover northern Togo (with big towns such as

Atakpamé, Sodoké and Kara, Alédjo, Tamberma countries, Niamtougou

etc.), Nangbéto Dam and the hippo’s lake.

· Artistic activities: get to know batik and sculpture techniques.

· Cultural activities: drumming (djembé) and dances around the fire.

· A day with a family: spending a day within an African family, with thematic approaches such as animism, the chief’s enthroning ceremony, a traditional wedding, a day in the fields, etc.

· It is worth mentioning that the activities are only proposed to the volunteers. They are related to internal management and have to be checked with the camp leaders, especially excursions and their related costs.
