Background/Project:  The healthy development of children and adolescents is influenced by many societal institutions. After the family, the school is the primary institution responsible for the development of young people.Research also has shown that school health programs can reduce the prevalence of health risk behaviors among young people and have a positive effect on academic performance.Scientific reviews have documented that school health programs can have positive effects on educational outcomes, as well as health-risk behaviors and health outcomes.

VIN has been supporting schools in Jitpur since 2007 through volunteers and medical doctors. There are 8 schools and 9 early childhood development (ECD) centers.  The School health talk on Hygiene and Sanitation program is a core component of VIN’s community health program. It is designed to ensure the good health of school children. It focuses to improve children health by conducting awareness sessions on health and hygiene (H & H) and improving schools environment. Its main components are awareness programs and waste management of schools encouraging school children. It is targeted to all schools of Jitpur.

Objectives:  To raise awareness and provide training on correct health and hygiene practices, to manage the waste of school areas.

Work: Awareness campaign, Training on basic health and hygiene (eg. Tooth brushing, hand washing etc.), Garbage collection management

Location:  Jitpur community of Kathmandu District, which is only about 11 km away from main ring road to Balaju, Kathmandu

Accommodation:  The volunteers will stay with the host family/hostel identified by VIN.  The living facilities are simple and basic. Male and female work campers will share the same living area with separate rooms.  There will be 2-4 persons in one room. Workcampers are required to sleep on the simple beds and carry their sleeping bags.

Language: Basic English should be spoken among participants

Fee: The participation fee will be 200 Euros to be paid on your arrivals, covering   foods, local transport, accommodation, administration cost, and material for the camps, T-shirt, and VIN certificate of participation. Volunteers are requested to bear their own health and travel insurance.  Please keep it in your mind that all personal expenses and free day expenses are excluded.

Meeting point: VIN office, Balaju on the first day at the latest 12.00 midday.

Leisure Activities: Either before or after your workcamp, there exists the option to undertake a short VIN-organized tour to one of Nepal’s nearby attractions.
