The volunteers will work directly with the sanctuary personnel, other local volunteers and biologists who patrol the beaches. Most of the work will be done during the night, which is why the volunteers have to adapt to these schedule. Activities will consist in the rescue of sea turtles arriving to lay eggs in the beaches: patrol looking for nests or turtle mothers laying eggs, excavate and collect eggs to bury them back in the sanctuary s protected area. Taking care and cleaning the living space of turtles found in the beach while receiving medical assistance. Cooperate in the care and release of the new-born turtles. They will also assist the recompilation of statistical data such as nests counting, eggs and freed baby turtles. Other activities will be related to the maintenance, development of the sanctuary s facilities, and talks about environment and turtle cares to both tourists and inhabitants of the nearby communities.
The volunteers will camp in the beach in camping tents next to the turtle sanctuary. It is mandatory that each volunteer bring a sleeping bag and a yoga mat. The camping tents will be shared and provided by the sanctuary. It is possible for the volunteers to bring their own camping equipment if they decide to sleep in smaller tents. The center has basic services such as bathrooms, showers (no hot water) and kitchen.
Depending on the needs of the different sanctuaries, the volunteers may be required in one of three different ports where the workcamp activities take place: Puerto Arista, Boca del Cielo or Barra Zacapulco, all small towns located in the pacific coasts and close to one another.
Volunteers interested in participating in this project must: be over 18 years; have a great motivation to participate in all the activities the center carries out for the preservation of the species; be willing to work during the night under the weather conditions of the zone; and possess a creativity for proposing recreational activities for the waiting times during the day.
