Descripción:
A city of Joy and Love, Grandeur and Glory... Kolkata also known as Calcutta, is full of life and bustle, verging on the chaotic as traditional occupations rub shoulders with ultramodern industries. Kolkata is India s second largest city, the capital of West Bengal and the formerly the capital of British India (1772-1912). It is a city with a great deal of charm - its imperial monuments, strong cultural and religious favour. However it is also suffering from a terrible lack of hygiene, illiteracy and unemployment are rampant, and the first to suffer from these poor living conditions are the children. In an effort to bring a bit of joy back to the faces of the street/slum and orphan children of Calcutta, FSL-India in co-operation with local NGO s will conduct a Happy Hearts Work Camp: it will consist of a series of Happy Hearts sessions in which the group of volunteers will organise activities to entertain and open the minds of the children to the outside world. Volunteers will also undertake some smple renovation work in the schools like painting, toilet and kitchen repair work, tree planting, making a Kitchen garden etc. This Workcamp will feature one week of creative education and one week of continuous special activities. In our regular programs we have a day or two to plan for the Happy Hearts but in this camp, the second week will have visit activities such as visit to the planetarium, amusement park, picnincs and so on. This camp is also dependant on the number of registrations for the camp. These activities are possible if the received participant applications are at least 12 volunteers.
Accommodation: In a rented Guest house or Hostel, with shared rooms. Accommodation can vary a lot in our camps from youth hostels, guest houses, lodges etc. The accommodation will be simple but comfortable and clean, so be prepared to live a simple lifestyle during these two weeks. Food: Indian food will be provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Filtered water is always available for drinking purposes.
Location:Kolkata/Calcutta is located in the state of West Bengal. Accessible by air, Kolkata has a domestic and an international airport. Trains and buses operate on a daily basis from many major towns/cities in India. The exact Meeting Point will be mentioned in the info sheets.Leisure: Weekends are free The volunteers will not work on Saturdays and Sundays. They can plan their free time accordingly. The camp leaders are there to provide you with the necessary information about interesting excursions and trips around the camp site. To promote intercultural learning, the team leaders will arrange visits to places of interest, weddings, festivals, local house visits, interaction with local youth etc. The local community would be more than happy to welcome you. Please use this opportunity to exchange experiences, to learn more about other social, cultural and political living conditions and to show them, in return, yours. In order to promote that, we will have a special cultural evening, when the volunteers will be able to present their countries and interact with the locals.
All nationals need a visa to enter India. Please apply at the nearest Indian Embassy. You may also need a few vaccinations to enter India; this depends on your home country. Ask your sending organization for more details. Kindly send us a Motivation letter along with your application - it helps us to get to know you better and to find out what your expectations are.
