Aurangabad is a city in the state of Maharashtra, meaning Built by the Throne and is named after the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The city is a tourist hub, surrounded with many historical monuments, including the Ajanta Caves (30 kilometers from Aurangabad) and Ellora Caves (there are about 34 caves in Ellora, located 30 kilometers from Aurangabad), which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. But Aurangabad s crowning glory for tourists is undoubtedly the famous Buddhist caves at Ajanta and the magnificent rock temples of Ellora, built between 200 BC and 650 AD. Recently, Aurangabad has been declared as Tourism Capital of Maharashtra, and has become a thriving industrial center with many fine academic institutions. Its textiles are much sought after and even today, the weavers of Aurangabad produce fine textiles like Paithani, Himroo and Kimkhwab.The work camp involves teaching children from poor and marginalized community in the non-formal schools about basic English and Mathematics, Health and Hygiene, and Environmental protection through creative learning methods like art, music, games etc. There will also be house visits and meetings with local people as part of inter-cultural learning and to give awareness on health, education and hygiene. Volunteers will take the school children to places for exposure visits, picnics. Volunteers also will get a chance to take part in some renovation work at local schools/orphanages and engage in activities like painting, making Kitchen garden, tree plantation etc. The volunteers will also get a chance to visit Ajanta and Ellora.
Accommodation: In a rented Guest house or Hostel, with shared rooms. Accommodation can vary a lot in our camps from youth hostels, guest houses, lodges etc. The accommodation will be simple but comfortable and clean, so be prepared to live a simple lifestyle during these two weeks. Food: Indian food will be provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Filtered water is always available for drinking purposes.
Location:Aurangabad is located in Maharashtra state, western India. Chikalthana Airport (Domestic Airport) in Aurangabad is 10 kilometres away from the city centre and is well linked with Mumbai (the nearest International Airport) and other major cities in India. There are regular trains to Aurangabad from Mumbai and other major railway stations in the country. Aurangabad is well connected to all the major towns in the state. Private and state owned public transport buses connect Aurangabad with neighbouring cities. The exact Meeting Point will be mentioned in the info sheets.Leisure: Weekends are free The volunteers will not work on Saturdays and Sundays. They can plan their free time accordingly. The camp leaders are there to provide you with the necessary information about interesting excursions and trips around the camp site. To promote intercultural learning, the team leaders will arrange visits to places of interest, weddings, festivals, local house visits, interaction with local youth etc. The local community would be more than happy to welcome you. Please use this opportunity to exchange experiences, to learn more about other social, cultural and political living conditions and to show them, in return, yours. In order to promote that, we will have a special cultural evening, when the volunteers will be able to present their countries and interact with the locals.
All nationals need a visa to enter India. Please apply at the nearest Indian Embassy. You may also need a few vaccinations to enter India; this depends on your home country. We accept applications on a first come i first serve basis. Hence, we do not guarantee that the camp will have 18 volunteers with minimum male and female participants as indicated above. The participation fee for this camp is calculated as per the current exchange rate 1 Euro = 70 Indian Rupees ( subject to change upon arrival ).
