World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) - HampiFounded in 1336, the site of Hampi is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, in Karnataka - south India and is known for its temples, monuments and architecture. In 1986, UNESCO inscribed the group of monuments at Hampi as a World Heritage site. More recently in 1999 Hampi was listed by UNESCO on the List of World Heritage sites in Danger prompted by the construction of two new suspension bridges and a new major road within the Core Protected Area which threaten the World Heritage site s integrity.UNESCO World Heritage Center along with CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Sevice) and partner organizations launched the initiative World Heritage Volunteers - aimed at raising awareness about the necessity to protect, preserve and promote cultural and natural heritage sites. In 2010 and 2011, FSL-India decided to participate in this initiative by organizing the World Heritage Volunteers camp in Hampi. The success of previous camps has encouraged us to continue our partnership with CCIVS/UNESCO and World Heritage Volunteers. The main objective of the camp would be to spark interest among the local community by involving children, youth and international volunteers in activities that promote sensitivity and respect towards the World Heritage site at Hampi. The work will require a lot of creativity and motivation from the volunteers to convey the message through dramas, plays etc. Volunteers will be involved in the following activities: A. Involve the local school children in activities to raise awareness about culture and heritage conservation.B. Clean up activities around Virupaksha temple and Hampi Bazar, which is most visited by tourists and Pilgrims.C. Preparation of Nursery by planting saplings and encouraging children to look after them. D. Organizing Drawing competition for the school children and opening it up to local people by setting up an open art gallery. E. Conduct an Awareness walk or Street Play on Heritage conservation with the help of local tour guides and university students.F. Form Heritage Clubs in schools, with an aim to initiate active participation of youth by encouraging school children to become Young Guardians / Ambassadors of the Heritage sites.
Accommodation: In a rented Guest house or Hostel, with shared rooms. Accommodation can vary a lot in our camps from youth hostels, guest houses, lodges etc. The accommodation will be simple but comfortable and clean, so be prepared to live a simple lifestyle during these two weeks. Food: Indian food will be provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Filtered water is always available for drinking purposes. FSL-India has been running workcamps all over India since 2001. Over the years, FSL-India has developed a strong network of local partners and local volunteers in the regions where we conduct our camps. In every workcamp, FSL-India works in partnershipwith local NGOs i since they are able to identify the problems and needs of the locality. This helps us achieve sustainability and a larger impact in the work that we do. Partnering with a local NGO also helps in reaching out to the local community. In addition, FSL-India works in various fields in cooperation with Archaeological Survey of India, Ministry of Women and Child Welfare, Ministry of Health, Education, Forest and Wildlife Departments and Local Self-governance Bodies.
