Descripción:
Girls in many parts of India are being killed even before they have a chance to be born. The numbers of females are dwindling. Female and male ratio is getting worse every year as these areas are becoming more affluent and have easy access to modern-day technology to get abortions done without any serious medical consequences. There are also cases where girls are not aborted, but they usually die within the first year or two from lack of care by parents or they are murdered. In short, girls continue to be treated as a liability. The main reason for the widespread female foeticide and the continuing prevalence of female infanticide in parts of India was the dowry system, which although long prohibited by law, continues to play a significant role in Indian society. Added to this the low status of women in rural India, where they perform the menial tasks of the family such as carrying water and firewood and seeing to feeding the animals, and it is clear where the roots of the discrimination spring. As a volunteer you will have ample opportunity to work with local community and the organisations working on prevention of female feticide/ infanticide. Conducting community awareness on the ill-effect of female feticide/ infanticide, facilitate training and capacity building for the women and youth groups, network with child rights organisations, participate in advocacy and campaign against the issues, conduct surveys, documentations, designing appropriate IEC (Information, Education and Communication) materials and community awareness will be the primary job responsibility of the volunteer.
You could be staying with local families near to the project. You could be sharing rooms with 2-3 volunteers or staying on your own. Sometimes, projects provide accommodation for the volunteers. The project will provide a room that is shared by other volunteers or with the staff of the project.
Our projects are spread out across different regions in South India. Your project location could be in any one of the following locations - Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, Kundapur, Udupi, Mangalore, North Karnataka. You will be notified of the location of your project a month prior to your arrival. During the Orientation week, one can find out the leisure activities around your area. There are lots of things to do in south of India.
What is needed to be an LTV We welcome anybody who is interested to participate in our voluntary programs regardless of age, sex, religious belief, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Most of our programmes do not require any specific skills. But as the work is humanitarian in nature, we encourage volunteers to be: O Open Minded: It is essential to be open to new ideas, situations, morals, values and ways of doing things. Things may be different from what you are used to or your existing expectations. If you remain open minded then you will be flooded with new opportunities. Broadening the mind is at the heart of inter-cultural exchange. O Flexible: Remaining flexible to ideas, people, situations and encounters is important. While working at social projects, you will be dealing with people i and people are unpredictable. Taking a flexible approach is often the best way to deal with such situations. O Creative: Taking a creative approach to your volunteer placement and work maintains motivation and, prevents routine and boredom for yourself and the project. When you start to think creatively it is amazing what can be achieved.
