WHERE?

BRUSSELS, Ossegempark, right in front of the famous Atomium, Belgium

THIS PROJECT…

“After 29 unforgettable years, “Couleur Café” has really become the exotic opening of the festival season. What started out as a unique and predominantly African music festival in the Halles de Schaerbeek is now one of the biggest names within the copious Belgian festival tradition. Many basic ingredients characterizing “Couleur Café” were there right from the start: invigorating and exotic music, a colorful decoration, an exotic bazaar, delicious world food stands, marching bands and a focus on Belgian artists. But it’s mainly due to moving to the magnificent park by the Atomium, an audience that grew 15 times bigger over the years (from 5,300 to 70,000) and a more eclectic, yet all based on black roots music, line-up that “Couleur Café” can truly be called the biggest urban music festival of the country. The festival and its artists, decoration and public are a spot-on reflection of the cosmopolitan city of Brussels.”

ACTIVITIES…

Before the festival, you will be part of the construction team. The first step is to put fences around the area. Then, signage has to be put up, ways have to be cleared, dressing rooms have to be prepared, etc.

During the festival, you can enjoy the concerts. You will also help the crew during the festival for various tasks (serving visitors, cleaning …)

TO THE POINT…

  • Dates: June 18 to July 2, 2018 (this year) – next available in 2019
  • Type: music festival
  • Max volunteers: 10 volunteers / Volunteers must be at least 18 years old when the project starts.
  • Accommodation: Volunteers will have a spot in the volunteer campsite. Therefore, you need to bring all of the necessary camping gear: tent, mattress, sleeping bag, cookware, etc…
  • Working language: Able to communicate in French or English

TO KNOW…

  • Food: You will receive lunch and tickets for drinks. You need to have a budget for other meals.
  • Clothing: Boots or hiking shoes (you might not want to take nice shoes because you might get VERY dirty). Don’t forget, everything will take place outside.

Work clothes (for the construction work), and comfortable clothes (for the festival). Summer clothes AND winter clothes because it can get warm or cold! Volunteers need to bring clothes that dry fast because if you get wet, you might have to change clothes several times a day. If you think about bringing clothes that dry fast, you will not end up with only wet clothes left.

  • Material: If you are sensitive to noise, you can bring earplugs. They might be useful because it gets very noisy during the festival.
  • Pssssst: Must be ready to do physical work outside and to sleep in a very basic camping site
