The project aims at the initiation of a scheme of revival of the North Karpathos and Saria protected area195;239;?239;?s rural landscape with a decisive input of volunteer labor provided in the context of a diverse ecotourism activity195;239;?239;?The protection of terrestrial, coastal and marine biotopes of Mediterranean and European interest and the preservation of the respective biodiversity195;239;?239;?The Promotion of environmental awareness among the local community 195;239;?239;?The conservation of footpaths from the vegetation and renovation of signal, wherever needed
Volunteers will be accommodated in a primary school of the island. The accommodation is basic but adequate; volunteers will sleep on the floor in the classrooms of the school. Sleeping bags and roll mats are necessary. There are toilets, showers (no hot water) and cooking facilities at the school. Everyday two different volunteers from the group, in shifts, will be responsible for maintaining the group accommodation place clean, as well as for the preparation of all the meals for the group of volunteers.
The area includes the north part of Karpathos with the island Saria and includes the traditional villages of Olympos, Avlona, Tristomo and the coastal village of Diafani with its harbor. The two islands are separated by a narrow sea lane, the Saria strait. The area has become part of the NATURA 2000 Network as one of the most important ecological regions of Europe. The north region of Karpathos-Saria is exceptionally mountainous, the highest peak of North Karpathos is and 195;239;?239;?Prophet Elias195;239;?239;?, 719 m, and of Saria is and 195;239;?239;?Pachi Vouno195;239;?239;?, 631 m, there are streams, rocky, steep coasts and screes. The intense relief of the region, with the large gradients, in combination with the strong winds and the low water availability play an important role to the form of vegetation in the area. Although the dominant vegetation is the brushwood, on the east of North Karpathos, as well as on the east and south of Saria, wooded areas of pine-trees (Pinus brutia) are also found. In their free time, participants will have the opportunity to get in touch with the everyday life of the island; they may attend local events (concerts, festival, performances, etc.). Volunteers will discuss their free time activities with their camp leaders; together they are going to organize excursions and visits around the city.
ELIX is looking for volunteers that are very keen on environmental protection and motivated by such projects. They should be prepared for the very simple living condition and not many urban choices for their free time.
