Descripción:
Climate Change and Bio-diversity has become an important development discourse globally and locally. Protecting biodiversity and designing appropriate and effective strategies to address climate change is essential for sustainable economic development, a healthy environment and for food security. It has become clear for the scientific community that the linkages between Community, Climate Change and Conservation are deeper than they appear to be. In most parts of rural landscapes, the communities too have begun to form a collective understanding about climate change, bio-diversity and livelihoods. Changing monsoon cycles, delayed onset of monsoon, flash floods and increasing cycles of droughts are the important issues affecting the community. For farmers, the choice of crops and varieties are highly dependent on the climate. Since the climate is changing, so is cropping seasons and choices made by the farmers. Due to these changes, some areas are experiencing torrential rains and flash floods while other regions have been deserted by rains for a long time. This is a direct impact of climate change closely experienced by people. This is because such changes on local and regional levels certainly affect the livelihoods and food security. As a volunteer, you will be assigned to work with organisations who are involved in developing mechanisms of adaptations among the rural communities, who are at the frontline to experience the effects of climate change. The first step is to create awareness among the community about climate change and the need of local level adaptations. You will be working with communities to generate such awareness about climate change and bio-diversity, by designing new livelihood options in response to changing climatic conditions, and build resilience within the ecosystems as well as among local communities to prepare the landscapes for adaptation. Conducting surveys, documentations, policy advocacy, designing appropriate IEC (Information, Education and Communication) materials, community awareness and education, training and capacity building will be the primary responsibility for the volunteers who opt to work on this theme.
You could be staying with local families near to the project. You could be sharing rooms with 2-3 volunteers or staying on your own. Sometimes, projects provide accommodation for the volunteers. The project will provide a room that is shared by other volunteers or with the staff of the project.
Our projects are spread out across different regions in South India. Your project location could be in any one of the following locations - Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, Kundapur, Udupi, Mangalore, North Karnataka. You will be notified of the location of your project a month prior to your arrival. During the Orientation week, one can find out the leisure activities around your area. There are lots of things to do in south of India.
What is needed to be an LTV We welcome anybody who is interested to participate in our voluntary programs regardless of age, sex, religious belief, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Most of our programmes do not require any specific skills. But as the work is humanitarian in nature, we encourage volunteers to be: O Open Minded: It is essential to be open to new ideas, situations, morals, values and ways of doing things. Things may be different from what you are used to or your existing expectations. If you remain open minded then you will be flooded with new opportunities. Broadening the mind is at the heart of inter-cultural exchange. O Flexible: Remaining flexible to ideas, people, situations and encounters is important. While working at social projects, you will be dealing with people i and people are unpredictable. Taking a flexible approach is often the best way to deal with such situations. O Creative: Taking a creative approach to your volunteer placement and work maintains motivation and, prevents routine and boredom for yourself and the project. When you start to think creatively it is amazing what can be achieved.
