Healthcare and the lack of easy access to it prevent people from upward social and economic mobility in India. Healthcare facilities in India are difficult to access. Government hospitals, though technically free, are so overwhelmed by the incongruity between the massive population of patients and the deficiency of qualified medical staff that they cannot cope with the load. Such health care facilities have a perpetual shortage of essential medicines and are unable to perform essential diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. On the other hand, rates of children under-nutrition in India remain high despite economic growth. Under-nutrition is responsible for 35 of deaths among children under 5 and 11 of the total global disease burden. It also reduces schooling attainment, an improvement in height for age and substantially increases the likelihood of being poorer later in life since less schooling is a predictor of lower wage and lower lifetime incomes. According to the World Health Organization, a majority of the top 10 causes of death in India are both treatable and preventable. Therefore, to supplement the effort of the Government many organisations are working in India to provide health care to people and improve the nutritional status of the children. As a volunteer you will have to work with healthcare centres or community based organisations that are catering to the healthcare and nutritional needs of the rural community. Organising health camps; providing health and nutritional education to children, youth/adolescent and community; conducting community awareness; facilitate training and capacity building for the health workers, community mobilisers on preventive, curative and rehabilitative health intervention; conduct surveys; documentations; designing appropriate IEC (Information, Education and Communication) materials on health and nutritional aspect will be your assignments as a volunteer.
You could be staying with local families near to the project. You could be sharing rooms with 2-3 volunteers or staying on your own. Sometimes, projects provide accommodation for the volunteers. The project will provide a room that is shared by other volunteers or with the staff of the project.
Our projects are spread out across different regions in South India. Your project location could be in any one of the following locations - Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, Kundapur, Udupi, Mangalore, North Karnataka. You will be notified of the location of your project a month prior to your arrival. During the Orientation week, one can find out the leisure activities around your area. There are lots of things to do in south of India.
What is needed to be an LTV We welcome anybody who is interested to participate in our voluntary programs regardless of age, sex, religious belief, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Most of our programmes do not require any specific skills. But as the work is humanitarian in nature, we encourage volunteers to be: O Open Minded: It is essential to be open to new ideas, situations, morals, values and ways of doing things. Things may be different from what you are used to or your existing expectations. If you remain open minded then you will be flooded with new opportunities. Broadening the mind is at the heart of inter-cultural exchange. O Flexible: Remaining flexible to ideas, people, situations and encounters is important. While working at social projects, you will be dealing with people i and people are unpredictable. Taking a flexible approach is often the best way to deal with such situations. O Creative: Taking a creative approach to your volunteer placement and work maintains motivation and, prevents routine and boredom for yourself and the project. When you start to think creatively it is amazing what can be achieved.
