Background:
Shimane International Center was established in Shimane prefecture in order to promote international exchange and cooperation with many oversea countries.
This center has conducted many programs, such as giving Japanese guidance to non-Japanese residents, accepting foreign students and offering the place for intercultural exchanges between citizens and foreign people. Volunteers will work in Nature museum which the Center runs.
Work:
Volunteers will help indoor and outdoor works in the Nature Museum.
- Arranging (classifying) insects samples, guiding visitors at the exhibits
- Translating signs or brochures of the museum.
- Helping with special exhibits and astronomical observation programs
- Helping with inter-cultural exchange events for visitors (mainly elementary school children and kindergarteners)
Accommodation:
Volunteers will be accommodated in National Sanbe Youth Friendship Center, close to the museum.
Facilities:
Bedding will be provided. There are a washer, a bath room and a lavatory. Public phone is available nearby.
Meals:
Breakfast and dinner will be provided in the dining room. For lunch, lunch box will be provided.
What to bring:
Volunteers need to bring clothes which are suitable for the work such as T shirts, pants, sneakers. It will be quite cool in the mornings and evenings. So please bring long sleeved shirts. A hat/cap for outdoor work is a must, toiletries and towels are necessary as well.
Note:
One night home stay will be planned.
Location:
Shimane Pref. is located in the west part of the mainland and faces the Japan Sea. Endowed with abundant natural beauty, Shimane changes its seasonal expressions so gracefully every time the seasons change from one to another. Oda-shi, where this museum is located, has a population of 40,000 people, and lies about 600 meters above sea level, surrounded by beautiful nature. Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, a World Heritage site, is about 40 minutes away by car.
From JR Oda-shi station, it takes 60 min by bus to get to the Nature Museum.

Remarks:
Japanese skill (able to understand daily conversation) would be required. You are expected to help visitors showing around the exhibits.
Since there are various duties in Sahimel, volunteers who have interests in many different fields
and with spirits of challenge are most desirable. Volunteers who love the nature and are eager to
experience country life are also welcome.
Homestay may be arranged (TBD). Approximately 5,000 YEN will be needed for sightseeing a day
for the transportation fee and some entrance fee for the landmarks.
