Workcamp in Rabat, ruins of Chellah

The aim of this project is to contribute to the mainteinance of Chellah ruins, The site was granted World Heritage Status in 2012, that's why we consider our duty to keep it cleaned and in a good state. The volunteers, at the same time, will have the opportunity to get to know the place in a cultural way.

We have chosen Chellah because of its importance not only in Morocco, but in the world, as its considered world heritage. The roman ruins are well conserved although a hand is always needed. We have an agreement with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Youth because they also consider very interesting to bring young volunteers from abroad to Morocco so that they can get to know this precious ancient heritage and at the same time help with its conservance.

They will assist the staff working in Chellah with routine tasks such as cleaning grounds, emptying trash, cleaning and preparing the visitor center, sweeping and blowing walkways, and pruning and watering plants, sometimes painting some spaces when allowed. They will assist in preserving, inventorying and monitoring natural and cultural resources of the Ruins such as plants, animals and archeological sites.

Apart from working in Chellah, those young people can participate also in various activities. The volunteers have the possibility to get in contact with the local people, take part in the Moroccan habitudes and way of life. 
The general organization and responsibility of the workcamp lies in a camp leader who may as well prepare an animation program for the participants, including the proposition of spare-time activities in the surrounding area, although the volunteers can also take initiative on this and propose other activities.

This workcamp is also for national volunteers so the ones coming from abroad will appreciate their everyday  life habits and culture through practical and social involvement. They will get in touch with national volunteers so that they can get involved in the community, not only inside the center but also outside, when they finish their work.
Rabat is the capital and fourth largest city of Morocco with an urban population of approximately 580,000. Rabat features a Mediterranean with Oceanic influence. Located along the Atlantic Ocean, Rabat has a mild, temperate climate, shifting from cool in winter to warm days in the summer months 
The biggest place for theatre is the Theatre Mohammed V in the centre of the town. The city has a few official galleries and an archeological museum. Many organizations are active in cultural and social issues.

The volunteers are not required to have any previous experience. We are looking for enthusiastic, positive and respectful people, who are willing to work close with people from other nationalities to learn new skills and develop new relationships in ways that they choose and at a pace they feel comfortable with.

- Cleaning the medieval fortified necropolis as a part of its maintenance.

- “Green activities”. The volunteers will help cutting the leaves of the trees and other gardening activities

Basic tools for the activities described above will be given.

- Cooking in teams with other volunteers, both national and international.

- Some extra activities will be organized by the association like animation with children.

The volunteers will work five days per week, four hours per day in the morning or the afternoon and get two free days, it can be the weekend or other days, this will depend on the work plan.

The volunteers will live in an appartment located in Rabat city center. They will share rooms and sleep in mats. Although it will be summer, sometimes it gets fresh at night, so its highly recommended for them to bring their own sleeping bag.

We will cook 3 meals per day and we will make shifts to prepare them. Some days some volunteers will cook and others clean and the other way around. We will all help each other with the different tasks. We need to highlight something that might be a bit difficult for the volunteers, given the past experiences with them. In Morocco, is rare to find the toilets that they are used to have in Europe. In this country, the toilet is normally a typical turkish bath.

 Rabat ville train station. Rabat airport has a lot of flight connections. Once you get out of it, you will find a bus that costs 20 dirhams and that leaves you in front of the train station. You will find also several taxis that should take you to the city center. You can deal with them the exact point and the price, that should be 100 Dirhams.

Someone can go and pick you up from the airport for 150 Dirhams. If you arrive to any other airport in Morocco, it will be easy for you to reach Rabat by train, just check the timetables on: www.oncf.ma

The meeting point will be arranged by email before your arrival to Rabat, once you have passed them your flight details. The info sheet will be send 3 weeks before the project starts
