Casa Gandhi: Cultural Rescue

PROJECT DETAILS: Casa Gandhi is an environmental education project, created in mid-2010, which is located in ‘Rancheria Los Alcanfores’ (outskirts of San Cristobal de las Casas). Activities are directed towards children in this area and the city center. The schoolhouse, located in an ecological reserve, aims to share an ecological consciousness of respect for Mother Earth. The work focuses on cultural recovery of children and families who come to Casa Gandhi to facilitate a fundamental process of growth for every individual which is established by constant social and collective work.
WORK: Volunteers will support leisure and recreational activities with children (painting, music, crafts, singing, recycling). Three days are devoted to the preparation of the workshops, which will begin on August 7th. The activities will focus on the environment, permaculture, supporting the school farm, growing vegetables, working with earthworms and composts, care of the little farm of animals, crafts with recycled materials, and paintings with natural dyes. One special activity will be: stories and games in the world. Therefore each volunteer will have a day where he/she can share games, songs, traditional food, pictures, music, etc (please bring along some of these of your country). By this the children can get to know a little bit of all the countries of the volunteers.
ACCOMODATION: A house in San Cristóbal de las Casas, only with basic facilities.

LANGUAGE: Basis Spanish would be welcome in order to be able to be in contact with the community, however it is not necessary.
LOCATION: San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.
FREE TIME: The volunteers can enjoy the variety of cultural activities that are possible in San Cristóbal de las Casas (theater, concerts, museums, hiking tours, etc.). Furthermore, there are places to visit like Cañón del sumidero, Arcotete, San Juan Chamula, Zinacantán, etc.
REQUIREMENTS: Good disposal to teamwork and interest in the subject.

The meeting point will be at the VIMEX office before the camp starts because all the volunteers will go together to the project
