The work to be performed by the volunteers will focus on park maintenance (physical work), cultural activities and the environment, however this will depend on the park needs when the workcamp begins. The projects could include: the rehabilitation of facilities in general (repairs, painting, etc.); care of both animal cages (and their food) and plants; design and construction of drinking fountains and new shelters for the park fauna; renovation of the laboratory and the current exhibitions. Volunteers will also help in the educational part of the park: the creation of educational displays (with subjects related to climate change, the water cycle, soil resources, ecosystems, etc.); the creation of educational programs for poor or homeless children and young people of rural schools close to the park; the development of institutional material related to environmental issues, from designing and producing posters and multimedia presentations to the realization of artistic material such as theatrical performances, a mural, dioramas, animal figures with paper or cloth, drawings, masks, games for children, etc.
The volunteers will be accommodated on the premises of the park in a shared coed room, and they will need to bring their own sleeping bag and blankets. They will have access to services such as hot water, bathrooms and a kitchen. The park will not be available during the weekend for the volunteers. The workcamps include three meals a day with standard quantities (about 300 grams per portion), additional quantities should be covered by the volunteer. Any special dietary requirements should be informed before the workcamp starts.
The park is located in the town of Zinacantan, 9 km outside of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas (about 20 minutes by public transport). San Cristobal de las Casas is a charming little town, which has maintained its colonial architecture and Mexican flavour, while welcoming a mixture of indigenous, national and international cultures. Similarly, it is a strategic starting point for the surrounding regions, which show a great biodiversity and natural areas that can be reached within a few hours. Some touristic attractions include parks, lakes, Mayan archaeological sites, mangroves, waterfalls and beaches.
