This region, known as Caria in the ancient period, came under the dominance of Mentese Beylik after 1261. Beçin, the administrative center of Mentese Principality, has about 20 historical buildings in a partially intact condition. Beçin, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2012, is one of the few cities in Anatolia that was founded by the Turks and has remained until today. 5 km from the town of Milas in Mugla. to the south of Beçin town; Geometrical, Archaic, Classical periods, Roman, Byzantine periods, Menteşeogullari Principality and the last period of the Ottoman Empire, such as an ancient settlement that has hosted many civilizations. Another important feature of Beçin, which has a very important place in terms of Turkish cultural history with its history and geography, is that it has been the capital of Menteseogullari Principality. Most of the buildings dating back to the period of Beyliks, as well as the Western Anatolian architecture of this period, in this region to illuminate the form and nature of the first Turkish settlement.
In the excavation area of Beçin Castle which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Tentative List, the volunteers helping a professional excavation team will take part in unearthing the history, and also will be helping the environmental arrangement and cleaning of the site, maintenance, basic repairing work, and landscaping.
Due to the hot weather in the summer months, excavations usually start at 5:00 am and end between 2 pm and 3 pm. There maybe changes in working program hours. The exact program will be available in the summer months. Beçin Castle Excavation, Istanbul Civilization University students and students from other universities in Turkey will participate. On weekends Saturdays will be working half-day, will not work on Sundays.
Volunteers will be accommodated in rooms with bunk beds in the excavation house allocated to the excavation team. Students can wash their clothes on the days allocated to them. Materials used in the washing machine (detergent, etc.) will be given by the Excavation Directorate. Those who do not want to use these materials have to provide the materials themselves. The meals will be prepared by the chefs appointed by the Ministry of Excavation. Breakfast and lunch will be served both in the excavation house and excavation area, and dinner will be served in the excavation house. The preparation of breakfast routine is done by the students in charge of the duty. For distribution of the meals and cleaning of the environment, the students will be in charge. In the breaks, the preparation of tea will be made by the students on duty. The students on duty will be responsible for the day when they get up in the morning until the day before they have taken over and handed over to the guard the next day.
Milas (MYLASA) is one of the most important and biggest centers of Western Caria. The city was founded on the foothills of Mount Sadra and on the hills in front of this mountain and spread over the plain in time. The presence of the Temple of Zeus Karius and the fact that the Temple of Zeus Labranda is very close to this place made Mylasa (Milas) the religious center of Karia. According to mythology, the ancient Mylasa, one of the most important cities of Caria, took its name from Mylasos who is coming from the descendants of Aiolos lived on the island of Aiolia in Mediterranean and dominated the winds. The suffix "asa" at the end of the name Mylasa shows that Milas was founded in ancient times (3,000 BC). Beçin Castle is 5 km to Milas, 50 km to Bodrum, 40 km to Ören(Keramos) and 65 km to Didim. The Ministry of Excavation will organize visits to other excavation sites near Milas (Stratonikeia Euromos Iasos), in order volunteers to explore Milas and its surroundings (Milas Museum, Bodrum or Ören).
During the remaining working hours; Turkey Archeology, Excavation Techniques, excavation Photography workshops for volunteers will be held on topics such as. The subjects of the workshops would be finalized in the summer months.
Preparations are underway to enable the Beçin Castle to be included in the Permanent List of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Volunteers should be very careful in this important historical area, and they should take utmost care not to damage the artifacts. The volunteers must provide CGC document, fill excavation participation form, write a motivation letter, and sign the excavation declaration. The states of health of the volunteers (any chronic illness, allergies etc.) and the name and content of the medicine that the volunteers have to take must be stated. As far as possible, students must take tetanus vaccines for protection purposes before they arrive. It is an obligatory to submit the current documents of the vaccination to the Ministry of Excavation upon request.
