Project Location

Bamusuuta Children’s home is found in Kiyuni village, Kalagi parish, Mulagi sub-county, Kiboga District-Uganda. Kiboga is 78 km along Kampala – Hoima Rd and Kiyuni lies approximately 1km outside Kiboga town.

Project Background

Bamusuuta children’s home started as an initiative way back in 1988 after realizing that a number of orphans were increasing at a fast rate as a result of the concluded 1980-1985 guerrilla war and the high prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS. The orphanage originated from UWESO group Kiboga which was a group of women and men who are still members of the organization up to now. The initial number of children was 40. Presently, the scope of service has been extended to cover 1000 orphans who stay with their guardians/parents in different homes.

Project Objectives

  • To improve the living conditions of the orphans
  • To restore and build hope for future in the orphans
  • To conduct psycho –social support activities with the kids

Activities

  • Mixing sand and cement
  • Colleting motor and water
  • Brick laying
  • Home visits to HIV/AIDS orphans

Expected Outcome

  • Restored hope for the future among the orphans and the community
  •  A foundation for the orphanage home will be constructed.

Cultural and educational visits

There is a possibility of visiting a cultural site at Bukomero some 10 km away from the  campsite and Lukola (wilderness where livestock farming  is practiced (50 KM) But at owners cost

Participation

We expect 25 participants maximum with composed of people from various volunteer organizations both from within and without Uganda. The participants will work 6 hours daily from Monday-Friday and weekend are for social interactions and/or excursions unless if the official camp has an activity.

Who qualifies to participate

  • One with positive attitude, willing to interact with other people from diversity of cultures
  • Willingness to share their experience
  • Flexible to live/stay in simple life condition
  • Ready to do manual work on the project activities
  • One that loves children.

 

The host community

The project location is in a predominantly Buganda population, speaking Luganda with a number fluent in English, Most of the interaction shall be with these kids some of who can communicate in English.

Accommodation

  • The project has the capacity to provide simple rooms in nearby school classrooms with closed doors and windows. Average but not luxury
  • The camp site has simple bathrooms with no showers
  • The camp site has pit latrines not toilets
  • And a simple cooking shelter(kitchen)

Meals

  • Volunteers will prepare their own meals using charcoal and firewood
  • There is a variety of foods to choose from
  • Participants will decide on the menu in accordance to availability
  • Participants will divide themselves in groups to prepare own meals.

Health services

Kiboga district hospital is 2 km out from the camp site, and a number of private medical clinics and drug shops are accessible near the camp site.

Water source

The water is accessible, protected and clean, 500 meters from the campsite. While tap water is also some distance away from the campsite(0.5 km)

Climate/Weather

August lies in the second rain season. It is characterized by both hot and wet. The evenings may most times be rainy. Temperatures range between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius

What to bring

Own sleeping bag, mat, pillow, mosquito net, sun/mosquito creams/repellents, working gloves and boots/shoes. Light working clothes during working hours and warm clothes at night. Musical instrument (optional), torch or flash light; water purifiers(optional) Personal effects (soap, toothpaste, toiletries. Bringing your national flag, common art facts of your country; stories, games, pictures and local recipes for cultural presentations from your country is advisable too for social interaction. Please carry along anything that culture to make it you feel can well introduce you and your culture to make it enjoyable. Above all do not forget a happy and positive attitude and energy. Play kits or items and sports for kids maybe welcome too but optional.

NB: Very short (Hot pants); skirts and dresses will not be culturally welcome especially for female.

Smoking in public is illegal while engagement in drug/harsh  carries a life prison sentence
